Maltese Editors’ Perspectives

Today’s Editorial seem to take a social tinge, with most editors focusing on the plight of distressed members of our society.

The Times of Malta‘s Editorial focuses on the changes brought about by isolation, including a re-evaluation of the logic that led us to a place where individuals, families and communities are radically disconnected from one another’s authentic needs and aspirations. The Editor calls on society to harness whatever opportunities arise, in the aftermath of the economic, social and political transformations that will undoubtedly follow the coronavirus in Malta.

The Independent recalls a number of tragedies related to the construction sector calling for a reduction in the power of this particular industry. The Editor says that curbing this situation must be a priority for Government once the current coronavirus crisis is over

Maltatoday argues that it is too early to say if people who have recovered from COVID-19 have developed protective immunity. The Editor argues that it would be unwise to return to business as usual when the lockdown ends. The paper calls for fast and accessible testing for virus surveillance, and a sensible strategy to contain small outbreaks without compromising vital services.

L-Orizzont’s Editor makes a very interesting and important argument on the use of the term ‘vulnerable’, a term which has been used frequently at this time of crisis. The argument here is that while the references to vulnerable persons are certainly well-intention, this tagging of persons could have negative repercussions on them. Additionally, the Editor takes exception that persons over the age of 65 are necessarily vulnerable in the sense that has been given in the past weeks.

In-Nazzjon also takes a social dimension in today’s editorial, insisting on the need to provide the necessary resources to those persons who are living close or below to the poverty line as well as those who have lost their jobs.
