Two strong Editorials in print condemn recent personal attacks on social media.
The Times of Malta discusses in its Editorial recent comments by former V18 director Mario P Azzopardi, in which he vilified MEP Roberta Metsola. The Editor notes that the outcry came across the political divide, but in contrast, nation’s authorities have remained conspicuous by their silence. No action was taken by the Teatru Manoel Board, either. The Editor strongly argues that such voices should not remain part of our society.
Maltatoday’s Editorial joins with the same argument, adding that vile comments have become the order of the day, particularly on social media. It also tackles the scourge of harassment of journalists. The Editor expresses hope that the general public also joins in condemnation of hate speech.
The Independent describes the upcoming Summer as a tough one for Malta’s artists, with so many events, such as Isle of MTV, Tomorrowland, Beer Festival, Ghana Fest, the Jazz Festival all cancelled or postponed. These events, in addition to the countless other large parties that would normally take place in summer, offer a strong financial stream for the music industry on the island, and the situation is most definitely going to have a negative financial effect on the local talents.
L-Orizzont focuses on recent NSO data about deposits in local banks. Both deposits by individuals and by businesses have registered strong increases compared to last year, a statistic which the Editor defines as an important measure of a healthy economy.
In-Nazzjon tackles energy prices, arguing that despite the recent collapse in the oil markets and the consequent lower prices for energy products, Government had tied his hands by selling crucial assets to China.
