The Times of Malta’s Editorial considers the first months of Robert Abela as Prime Minister. It says that his first decisions, such as booting people tainted by scandals was a positive start. However, this contrasted with the decision to open spring hunting and the drastic decision to shut Malta’s ports to new arrival, a decision which has fuelled the alarming anti-migrant sentiment and right-wing rhetoric.
The Malta Independent says that despite the current low number of new cases of coronavirus-infected patients, this should not lead us to lower our guard. The Editor calls on the public to continue following directives, in particular by avoiding visits to elderly and vulnerable people, reminding readers that people could show no symptoms yet carry the virus.
PN daily In-Nazzjon says that lives at sea should always be saved, but government should immediately seek to repatriate those immigrants who are not entitled to asylum and seek agreements with EU Member States to share immigrants who deserve such rights.
GWU’s L-Orizzont focuses on the need for Government to strike a balance between the needs of further development and residents. Authorities and developers alike need to devise methodologies which reduce the impact on families and neighbourhoods and improve the quality of the environment.
