Maltese Editors’ Viewpoints

A time for civic responsibility is the key message shared by editors this morning.

The Times of Malta uses its Editorial space to make a plea in favour of the most vulnerable, particularly low-income workers and elderly persons living on their own. Efforts should be made to ensure these people – while respecting isolation – do not feel lonely. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that we reach out to these people and assist in any way possible. When this crisis is over, the Editor concludes, we will hopefully be judged as a caring society where the weak are never forgotten.

The Independent describes the first months for newly-appointed Prime Minister Robert Abela as a baptism of fire. The Editor wonders whether business-oriented Muscat would have taken the same actions as his successor. However, the Editor feels that Robert Abela’s statements on COVID19 are re-assuring, something which would have been hard with Joseph Muscat.

Maltatoday calls it a time for civic responsibility. Citing the fact that until yesterday a number of popular areas were brimming with people was not helpful in the current situation. We need to change our lifestyles, a sacrifice to ensure that we go through the crisis with the least harm possible. While for 85% of their population the virus does not present particular risks, for the rest it could be a matter of life and death.

In-Nazzjon mirrors the same message, and insists that we must now all play our role. However, the Editor looks beyond the COVID crisis and express hopes that, at least, we will have learnt a lesson, that of respecting cleanliness all around us. This crisis has shown that whatever happens around us is ultimately a reflection of our actions.

L-Orizzont makes a strong appeal for silence. Silence from conflicting messages on the actions that need to be taken in the wake of the spread of COVID19 amongst the local population. It appeals to the general public to follow only directives given by the Authorities. It calls on those insisting on the need for ‘extreme measures’ to stop inducing panic to allow the population to follow the correct guidelines given by the experts in the field.
