Maltese Editors’ Viewpoints

Two of today’s Editorials analyse government’s economic package, with the other two focusing on the required change in lifestyle imposed by the current situation.

The Times of Malta’s Editorial looks into government’s economic packages, arguing that government guaranteeing a higher percentage of workers’ wages would have made it easier for employers to retain more of their employees until the crisis is over. The Editorial insists that finding ways to step up support for distressed individuals immediately is crucial to limiting the economic fallout resulting from this epidemic. The economy faces significant risks, including spiraling job losses, businesses bankruptcies and depressed consumption unless more robust measures are introduced to address these risks, concludes the Times.

The Independent tries to find a silver lining in the whole situation – describing the required change in lifestyle, which brought about more time with our close ones and less traffic on the road, as an opportunity to rediscover the real priorities in life.

L-Orizzont focuses on the 1.8 billion euro economic package announced by Government on Wednesday evening, saying that such a massive show of support towards business was possible due to the healthy financial position of the country. Such assistance, the Editor insists, would not have been possible had Government continued on the path of financial profligacy to which the previous administration had got accustomed to.

In-Nazzjon’s Editorial re-iterates the Authorities’ appeal for people to cooperate with the directives – although these might feel restrictive, they will guide us through out of the current crisis.  In particular, it calls on religious devotees to avoid organizing any activities despite the current Lenten period and approaching Easter festivities.
