Man shot dead by police in Philipines after violating coronavirus rules

Police shot and killed a 63-year-old man in the southern province of Agusan del Norte after he violated coronavirus rules by not wearing a face mask and threatened officers.

“The suspect was cautioned by a village health worker … for not wearing a face mask …

But the suspect got angry, uttering provoking words and eventually attacked the personnel using a scythe,” a police report stated. It is the first reported police killing for not obeying lockdown measures.

Earlier this week, President Rodrigo Duterte said he would order security forces to shoot troublemakers. Filipino officials say the country has so far registered 3,094 infections and 144 deaths due to the coronavirus.
