Man Utd scrapped LGBTQ+ jacket plans

Manchester United shelved plans to wear jackets supporting the LGBTQ+ community before Sunday’s victory over Everton after a player reportedly declined to participate.

According to The Athletic, defender Noussair Mazraoui opted out, citing his Muslim faith. United declined to confirm the player’s identity, and Mazraoui’s agent also chose not to comment.

The decision has drawn criticism, with LGBTQ+ supporters’ group Rainbow Devils expressing “great disappointment.” The gesture was part of the Premier League’s support for Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign, which promotes LGBTQ+ inclusion in sports. United captain Bruno Fernandes still wore a rainbow armband during the 4-0 win at Old Trafford.

The Athletic reported that Mazraoui, a £15m summer signing from Bayern Munich, informed teammates he would not wear the jacket. To avoid singling him out, the team collectively decided to forgo the initiative.
