Metsola calls for renewed enthuasism in European dream in acceptance speech

In her acceptance speech, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said Europe must be accessible to all, one which “everyone feels ownership of”. She addressed the issue of political violence, lamenting politics of “us and them, which turns people away”.

“Together, we must stand up for the politics of hope, for the dream that is Europe. I want people to recapture a sense of belief and enthusiasm for our project. A belief to make our shared space safer, fairer, more just and more equal. A belief that together we are stronger and we are better. A belief that ours is a Europe for all”, she said.

She added that the European Parliament is not afraid to take the difficult path, and is able to use its voice for the common good. “We need to fight for the rule of law, to ensure everyone is equal in Europe”. Metsola argued that not everyone is the same, but it was all about equality of opportunities.

“Different languages, cultures, stories distinguish us as Europeans”, she insisted.

She also said that the fight against climate change will be a key highlight of the next legislature, insisting that sustainable development should go hand in hand with protection of Europe’s natural heritage.

On social rights, she said that Europe cannot move forward if youth cannot rent, let alone buy their own property. She also addressed the issue that still too many women earn less then men for the same job, and still live in fear.

On migration, she said that border management and returns policy should be human-centric.

On Ukraine, she recalled that the Ukrainian people depended on Europe to keep resisting the Russian aggression. On the situation in the Middle East, Metsola called for a two-state solution and a return of all hostages.
