Michael Cohen is to call Donald Trump “a racist”, a “conman” and a “cheat” in his upcoming testimony, according to a copy of his opening statement obtained by the New York Times.
The president’s former lawyer, who will appear before House committee on Wednesday, is to claim Trump as a presidential candidate knew Roger Stone was talking to Julian Assange about a WikiLeaks drop of Democratic National Committee emails.
He is to add: “Never in a million years did I imagine, when I accepted a job in 2007 to work for Donald Trump, that he would one day run for president, launch a campaign on a platform of hate and intolerance, and actually win.
“I regret the day I said ‘yes’ to Mr. Trump. I regret all the help and support I gave him along the way.”
Earlier, Cohen testified before the Senate intelligence committee on Tuesday in the first of three congressional appearances this week to offer testimony about how Trump allegedly broke the law while in office, according to US media reports.
Cohen, who once said he would “take a bullet” for Trump but has since turned against his former boss, appeared before the Senate panel in a closed session.
Over the course of the hearings, NBC News said Cohen plans to “provide evidence of alleged criminal conduct by Trump since he became president”, while the New York Times reported Cohen “will use documents and his personal experiences to support his statements”.
