Good morning

The EU Summit about Migration and the Turkish Elections are the main events which perhaps characterised the latest hours with developments taking place during the night and news as such still falling into place.

While during the day we might expect more developments and analysis, in today’s Morning Briefing we try to cover the salient aspects of the past 24 hours.

The EU Migration Summit is one of the main news which also features prominently on the Maltese newspapers.

An emergency mini summit Sunday of EU leaders seeking a common solution on migration yielded a breakthrough, of sorts: a general agreement to stop seeking an overall, common solution. It was not exactly a failure, with leaders hailing new momentum in addressing the bloc’s most divisive political problem, and a commitment to continue their discussion at a regular EU summit later this week. After Sunday’s meeting there appeared to be consensus, at least among most of the 16 leaders who attended, that the challenges would be better tackled with partnerships among willing nations, rather than waiting for unanimity among all 28. Recep Tayyip ErdoganTurkey’s election authority chief early on Monday morning declared Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the winner of the presidential poll, with 53% of the votes. Opposition leaders have alleged electoral fraud. Earlier Turkey’s incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has claimed victory in critical elections based on unofficial results, securing an executive presidency with sweeping powers. Speaking in televised remarks from Istanbul late Sunday, 64-year-old Erdogan said “the nation has entrusted to me the responsibility of the presidency and the executive duty.” He also declared victory for the People’s Alliance, an electoral cooperation between his ruling Justice and Development Party and the small Nationalist Movement Party, saying they had a “parliamentary majority” in the 600-member assembly.  Click Image to Read More.

img_2019At least five people have been injured in an explosion in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Several residents have escaped and rescue efforts have been ongoing. An explosion in an apartment building in the western German city of Wuppertal seriously injured at least five people, according to local emergency services. Several residents escaped after the blast, but others became trapped and needed to be rescued on fire brigade ladders. Nun IraqAn Iraqi Sister who was forced to flee Islamic State in 2014 has been denied entry to Britain for a second time. Sister Ban Madleen previously applied for a UK visa to visit her sick sister but was refused permission in March. A second application for a month-long trip to see her sister and sister’s family was denied earlier this month. A letter from the UK Visas and Immigration division of the Home Office said she had not satisfied immigration rules – in essence, not proving she had sufficient funds and that she was genuinely seeking to visit her family rather than trying to make Britain her main home. Click Image to Read More.
