New pickpocketing scam hitting tourists in Bruges

Pickpockets are targeting tourists in Bruges by spraying them with fake pigeon poo before stealing their valuables while helping them clean their jackets.

Police in the Belgian tourist hotspot have issued a warning to travellers to be aware of the ruse after reports of at least two incidents of the scam.

The thieves spray a white liquid on an unsuspecting victim in the packed crowds of visitors before pointing out the mess and offering to help clean it.

They take advantage of their target scanning the skies for the airborne supposed culprits to rifle through pockets after pointing out the mess on the clothes.

Amid fears the tactic is widespread but largely unreported, officers called on victims to report any similar incidents in the picturesque city.
