Severe storms continue to pummel the Netherlands and Belgium

The Netherlands suffered a second night of severe storms that brought down trees and disrupted traffic as strong winds and heavy rain battered most of the country.

The KNMI weather bureau had first issued a code yellow weather warning but later in the evening updated this to orange for everywhere but Zeeland as the full extent of the storm became apparent.

In Amsterdam, five people were slightly injured in the storm, including one person hit by a falling tree next to the Amstel river, local media said. Elsewhere, several fires were started by lightning.

Belgium too got hit by the storms.

There were weather related problems in the Brussels due to flooding and fire-fighters in western Flemish Brabant received over a hundred calls. The situation in Lennik was particularly bad with a lot of damage due to the mud and water. Damage was also reported from Kapelle-Op-Den-Bos, Londerzeel, Grimbergen, Vilvoorde and Zaventem.

South of Brussels Halle too was hit as water from the torrential rain flooded into the centre of the city from higher suburbs.
