Oil prices reach 14-year high

Crude oil prices have surged to their highest levels in at least 14 years, climbing above $100 per barrel for the first time since 2022 as the war involving Iran disrupts key oil and gas production and transport routes in the Gulf.

The conflict has now entered its tenth day, with the United States saying its joint operations with Israel are progressing as planned and ahead of schedule. The campaign aims to weaken Iran’s missile and naval capabilities, limit its support for regional proxies and prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.

Meanwhile, Iran continues launching strikes on Israel and several Gulf states, pushing global energy prices sharply higher. Authorities in Iran also announced that Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been named the country’s next supreme leader. Separately, South Korea said it will introduce oil price caps to stabilise fuel costs amid the global energy surge.
