1603 Queen Elizabeth I was born. Elizabeth I ruled England and Ireland from 1558 till her death in 1603.

1776 First submarine attack during the Revolutionary War. The American submersible craft Turtle attempts to attach a time bomb to the hull of British Admiral Richard Howe’s flagship Eagle in New York Harbour. It was the first use of a submarine in warfare.

1940 300 German bombers raid London, in the first of 57 consecutive nights of bombing. This bombing ‘’blitzkrieg’’ (lightning war) would continue until May 1941.

1996  American rapper and actor Tupac Shakur, was shot by an unknown assailant after attending a boxing match and died six days later. Shakur was riding in a black BMW with Death Row Records founder Marion ‘’Suge’’ Knight wen a white Cadillac sedan pulled alongside and fired into Shakur’s car.

2005 Amid low voter turnout and allegations of irregularities, Hosni Mubarak won Egypt’s first multicandidate presidential election to remain in office.
