Photo Story: Dia de las Luminarias festival in Spain

A man on a horse jumps over a bonfire during the ‘Dia de las Luminarias’ (lit. Lights Day) festival in the village of Alosno, Andalusia, southern Spain, 16 January 2020 (issued 17 January 2020).

As each year, horses and donkeys jumped over bonfire to be protected by St. Antonio Abad.

The tradition, which is dated back to the Middle Ages in the belief that the fire has a purifying power over animals and drives away evil spirits, is held on the eve of St. Antonio Abad’s Day.
