Photo Story: Italy continues to enforce stay-at-home orders

Police and soldiers are being deployed across the country to ensure that citizens comply with the stay-at-home orders amid the national lockdown implemented in a bid to slow down the spread of the pandemic COVID-19 disease caused by the SARS CoV-2 coronavirus.

In its latest desperate effort to halt the epidemic Rome ordered that all businesses must close until April 3, with the exception of those essential to maintaining the country’s supply chain.

According to the decree announced by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on March 9, outings are only allowed for professional, health or food shopping reasons and offenders can be imprisoned for up to three months or fined.

According to the Civil Protection agency, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in Italy has risen to more than 47,000, while over 4,000 people have lost their lives to the disease in the Mediterranean country.
