Photo story: Petitions in Belgium for removal of Colonial King statues

A statue of former Belgian King Leopold II sprayed with paint is seen at the park of the Africa Museum, in Tervuren, near Brussels, Belgium.

At least two petitions were launched in Belgium to remove all statues in honour of the colonial-era monarch due to historical atrocities committed in his name in his former colony Congo, reports state.

The petitions to remove the monuments were launched amidst worldwide anti-racist protests following the death of George Floyd, a black US citizen who died after a white policeman kneeled on his neck for several minutes.
