Candles sit on steps during a vigil held on occasion of Saint John’s Eve in Cordoba, Spain, 23 June 2019 (issued 24 June 2019).
The San Juan Fiesta (Saint John’s Fiesta) is held every year in the early hours of 24 June, when people all over the country gather around bonfires for a traditionally pagan celebration to welcome the start of summer.
The event was later adapted by Christianity to become a religious tradition to celebrate the birth of John the Baptist.
