Poland’s borders to remain closed, first fatality among medical personnel

Poland’s borders will remain closed until at least May 3, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Thursday.

Morawiecki said Poland would start easing some coronavirus restrictions from April 20.

A 46-year-old physiotherapist from the Specialist Hospital in Radom who was infected with COVID-19 died in the early hours of Thursday, becoming the first confirmed fatal coronavirus victim among medical personnel in Poland.

About two weeks ago, the man developed coronavirus symptoms. The 46-year-old man was admitted to the anaesthesiology and intensive care unit.

The situation in the Radom hospital is dire. Over 200 people are infected with coronavirus, including doctors, nurses and other facility staff. Around 600 out of nearly 1,500 personnel members are under quarantine or on sick leave.

Poland’s Health Ministry announced that 336 new COVID-19 infections have been confirmed on Thursday, bringing the country’s total to 7,918 positive diagnoses.

The ministry also reported 28 new fatalities. As a result, the current death toll from COVID-19 adds up to 314.
