Portugal’s Parliament rejects vote for 16-year-olds

Portugal’s parliament has rejected a resolution calling for an extraordinary constitutional review to establish the right to vote for 16- and 17-year-olds.

The debate in the assembly saw many participants argue that there was no time to trigger a constitutional review before it would lapse with the end of the current parliament in September.

The resolution was opposed by the centre-right Social Democratic Party (PSD), the governing Socialist Party, the right-wing People’s Party and the Communist Party.
