Putin speaks by phone with von der Leyen

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday and congratulated her on her new position, according to the Kremlin.

The two leaders also discussed the upcoming Normandy Format meeting in Paris, where the presidents of Russia and Ukraine will meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron in an effort to push forward with a so-far failed peace plan to end the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

The Kremlin said Putin had also spoken by phone with former President Jean-Claude Juncker and that they agreed “to continue to maintain personal contacts.”
