Search and rescue underway after powerful Pakistan earthquake

Pakistan’s military said “aviation and medical support” teams had been dispatched to the area hit by Tuesday’s powerful earthquake.

Tremors were felt as far away as the capitals of Pakistan and India, Islamabad and Delhi respectively.

The 5.8 magnitude earthquake has struck eastern Pakistan, killing at least 20 people and injuring more than 300 but the full extent of the damage is not yet known.

The quake’s epicentre was close to the city of Mirpur, in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers with its epicenter lying 1km southeast of Mirpur, Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
