Security, competitiveness top priorities as Denmark takes on EU Presidency

Denmark has taken over the rotating six-month presidency of the EU Council, prioritising security and competitiveness amid rising geopolitical tensions and internal divisions.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that Europe is at a “defining moment,” highlighting the need for unity and resilience. Denmark, known for its pragmatic leadership, will act as mediator among member states during a period of uncertainty, with Donald Trump’s return to the U.S. presidency raising alarm over trade and defence.

Denmark must help coordinate the EU response if U.S. tariffs escalate and will need to keep member states aligned behind the European Commission. The country’s economic dependence on exports, including iconic brands like Lego and Carlsberg, makes this a delicate task. Trump’s past comments on Greenland remain a sensitive issue for Copenhagen.

The presidency begins as Denmark, a strong supporter of Ukraine, faces resistance on EU-wide sanctions and enlargement due to vetoes from Slovakia and Hungary. Denmark hopes to strengthen military aid to Ukraine and push forward accession talks despite these roadblocks.

Once a member of the Frugal Four, Denmark has shifted its stance, calling for greater EU defence spending in light of the war in Ukraine. Frederiksen argues rearmament is essential for the EU’s future security.

Denmark also hopes to uphold the EU’s Green Deal ambitions, arguing the green transition can coexist with economic competitiveness, despite growing calls across the bloc to water down environmental policies.

On migration, Denmark’s strict model is gaining traction within the EU, influencing reforms that include stricter asylum rules and offshore processing centres. While praised by some, rights groups warn the model risks undermining EU values.

As presidency, Denmark faces the tough task of balancing unity, resilience, and reform in a rapidly shifting European landscape.
