Sir Alex Ferguson is out of a coma and showing promising early signs of recovery following emergency surgery on a brain haemorrhage.

British football’s most successful manager remains in intensive care but has been sitting up talking to family and friends at Salford Royal Hospital, where he was admitted on Saturday.

Surgery went very well and the 76-year-old’s response to treatment has given encouragement and cautious optimism to those close to him. However, they recognise it will still be a slow road to full recovery as he continues to be assessed.

In an exclusive story carried by The Sun we read that Ferguson, stunned his family by asking for the football score after emergency brain op. The report quotes a source saying: “Typical Sir Alex. He can’t stop talking football.”

Fergie, 76 stunned his family minutes after coming round from emergency surgery — by joking about flying to Kiev in two weeks’ time for the Champions League final.

He reluctantly admitted his recovery will stop him attending his beloved Manchester United’s FA Cup Wembley showdown with Chelsea on Saturday week.

But he told family at his hospital bedside: “Aye, the Cup Final is out — but what about Kiev?”
