Socialists Push for Fairer Electrification to Cut Energy Costs and Boost EU Competitiveness

The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament are calling for a socially fair energy transition, arguing that electrification must deliver lower energy bills, stronger energy security and greater competitiveness for European industry.

The group said that the shift towards electrification is not only essential to achieving Europe’s climate goals but also a key tool in addressing the cost-of-living crisis. It argues that access to clean technologies, such as electric vehicles, heat pumps, solar panels and energy-efficient appliances, must not be limited to those able to afford high upfront costs.

A central element of the S&D position is the expansion of social leasing schemes, which it sees as a way to make clean technologies accessible to households that would otherwise be excluded. The group believes public support can help ensure that the benefits of electrification reach citizens, workers, small businesses and energy-intensive industries.

The Socialists also stress that electrification requires wider investment in modern electricity grids, renewable energy infrastructure and targeted public funding. They argue that cheaper renewable power must translate into lower bills for consumers and businesses, rather than being lost through market volatility, charges or outdated tariff structures.

For the S&D, the success of Europe’s energy transition will ultimately depend on whether it can combine climate ambition with social fairness, ensuring that the move towards cleaner energy strengthens both households and the European economy.
