Outgoing French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné will replace Thierry Breton as France’s nominee for European Commissioner, according to a statement by the Elysée. Séjourné, a close ally of President Emmanuel Macron, served as head of the Renew group in the European Parliament before becoming foreign minister.
Breton resigned unexpectedly, accusing European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen of undermining him and attempting to have Macron replace him for a more powerful portfolio. Macron had hoped for Breton to secure a key role focused on Europe’s strategic autonomy, but tensions with von der Leyen led to Breton’s departure, potentially delaying the EU’s post-election transition.
