Swiss researchers confirm a broken heart can be fatal

Swiss researchers have given more weight to what is known as the broken heart syndrome where the heart can be seriously damaged after a sad event.

This weakening of the heart happens suddenly, often after a stressful or emotional event such as bereavement or shock and experts believe it may be the brain’s doing. Often, an unhappy event is the trigger, but exciting big events, such as a wedding or new job, have been linked with it too.

Swiss researchers in the European Heart Journal suggests the mind’s response to stress plays a part. The syndrome is also known as takotsubo syndrome, referring to the shape of the heart in people with this condition, which resembles a Japanese pot with the same name.

It’s different to a heart attack, but has similar symptoms, including breathlessness and chest pain.

Research shows it can be temporary, with the heart recovering over days, weeks or months, but for some it can be deadly.
