Thomas Bajada to lead MEP negotiations on EU funding

Thomas Bajada, Labour MEP, has been appointed European Parliament rapporteur on the economic dimension of the new National and Regional Partnership Plans under the 2028–2034 Multiannual Financial Framework.

In this role, Bajada will steer Parliament’s position on how EU funding is structured and delivered across Member States, placing Malta at the centre of negotiations that will shape investment priorities for the next seven-year budget cycle.

Commenting on the European Commission’s proposals, he warned that the emerging framework risks shifting funds away from social investment, environmental protection and family wellbeing in favour of defence and industrial competitiveness. He stressed that island realities must be fully recognised in the new model, with funding structures reflecting the structural challenges faced by geographically isolated states and regions.

Bajada has held consultations in Malta and Gozo with key social and economic partners, pledging to work towards a fair and forward-looking EU financing framework.
