Tight security in Hong Kong as thousands protest

Hong Kong is under tight security as tens of  thousands people marched in the afternoon to protest against a contentious extradition Bill that has been suspended indefinitely.

Mass protests have been held for weeks, initially over an extradition deal with mainland China but now covering other key issues on democracy in Hong Kong. The latest rally was put on edge after a huge haul of explosives was found along with protest leaflets.

On Saturday, a counter-rally in support of the police and against protest violence drew tens of thousands.

It is the seventh consecutive weekend of protests in Hong Kong.

But the protesters are also angry at what they say is China’s erosion of the city’s cherished freedoms and on Sunday evening they took out their anger on the Liaison Office in the Sai Ying Pun district, west of Central on Hong Kong island.
