Traveling to Russia: High Risks and Essential Preparations

The United States has recently issued stringent travel advice, cautioning its citizens against visiting Russia. This updated advisory urges Americans to exercise the utmost caution and, if they choose to travel, to undertake serious preparations—including making funeral arrangements—due to the heightened risk of detention and mistreatment.

Details of the Advisory

Renewed on 29/12/2025, the Russia Travel Advisory from the U.S. Department of State explicitly instructs American citizens not to travel to Russia. The warning stems from a range of threats, including those associated with Moscow’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, unpredictable enforcement of Russian laws, and the possibility of terrorist attacks. The advisory emphasises the increased risk of harassment, persecution, or unlawful detention for foreigners.

The guidance highlights that Russian security services have arrested U.S. citizens on false charges, denied them fair treatment, and convicted them without credible evidence. Furthermore, Russian authorities have been reported to abuse foreigners and locals who are perceived as opposing Russia’s authority.

Preparations for Those Who Travel Despite the Warning

For individuals who choose to ignore the travel warning, the State Department strongly advises extensive preparations in case returning to the United States becomes impossible for a prolonged period. Recommended precautions include developing evacuation plans, providing loved ones with important documents, access data, and contact information, as well as arranging care for children, animals, or property.

In addition to these measures, travellers are urged to prepare a will, clarify any wishes regarding burial or funeral arrangements, and ensure that DNA samples are accessible to family members.

Digital Security Considerations

The advisory also recommends that travellers log out of all social media accounts and refrain from using them while in Russia. This is because Russian authorities can easily monitor electronic devices and scrutinise online activity for content that may be considered grounds for arrest.
