During a meeting at Mar-a-Lago, US President Donald Trump welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and expressed optimism about reaching a peace deal with Russia. Trump stated that a strong security agreement for Ukraine is possible, and emphasized European involvement, though European leaders were not present at the talks but will be briefed separately. He also plans to call Russian President Putin after the meeting.
Zelenskyy described “active diplomatic days” leading up to the meeting, stating that 90% of a potential agreement is done, but critical issues like security guarantees and territorial sovereignty remain unresolved. Despite ongoing negotiations, Zelenskyy noted that Moscow has shown no willingness to end its war or make concessions, as demonstrated by continued Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine.
Before arriving in the US, Zelenskyy met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and coordinated with European and NATO leaders regarding discussions with Trump.
European leaders will not participate in the Florida talks and won’t be physically present at the talk at Mar-a-Lago.
Nonetheless, according to the office of the president of Ukraine, Zelenskyy and Trump are expected to have a call with the European leaders one hour into their meeting, at approximately 8 pm CET.
