Two months after Patient-1, Italy sees first decline in active cases

Exactly two months after the first positive patient was identified in Codogno, near Lodi, in Lombardy, Italy has registered the first decrease in the number of active cases since the start of the emergency. The Civil Protection said that there are currently 108,237 people who are infected with the virus, as opposed to 108,257 on Sunday. One of the deaths confirmed in the past 24 hours concerns a 58-year old neurologist and is the 138th doctor to lose his life since the start of the coronavirus emergency in Italy.

During the past 24 hours, 454 people died, taking this particular total to 24,114. 2,256 new cases wer eidentified, taking the tally to 181,228.

The country also registered an increase in the number of recoveries (+1,822), reaching 48,877.

Meanwhile, the National Health Observatory has published indications on the expected date when it predicted that no new cases would be registered. Lombardy and Marche regions are not expected to reach this important milestone before the end of June, while Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany should not see any other cases beyond May. All other regions should report no new cases between the third week of April and the first week of May. The Observatory predicted that the first regions to register zero new infections are likely to be central Umbria and Southern region Basilicata, who should reach this stage by this week.
