Ukraine accuses Russia of ‘nuclear blackmail’ over weapons drills

Ukraine’s military spy agency spokesperson has expressed anger at Russia’s recent announcement of tactical nuclear drills as part of its ongoing nuclear coercion tactics.

Andriy Yusov stated on Monday that Russia’s actions are a familiar form of nuclear blackmail, typical of Putin’s regime.

The planned drills, as reported by the Associated Press, mark Russia’s first public acknowledgment of such exercises involving tactical nuclear weapons, although its strategic nuclear forces regularly conduct training sessions.

Tactical nuclear weapons, including air bombs, short-range missile warheads, and artillery munitions, are designed for battlefield use and are less destructive than the warheads found on intercontinental ballistic missiles, which are capable of devastating entire cities.

Russia’s announcement is seen as a cautionary message to Ukraine’s western allies against deeper involvement in the ongoing conflict, especially following statements from French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron indicating potential military support for Ukraine.
