US submits formal notice for withdrawal from Paris climate deal

The United States has formally told the United Nations is it pulling out of the Paris climate accord, a deal that was signed by Donald Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday that he submitted a formal notice to the United Nations. That starts a withdrawal process that does not become official for a year. His statement touted America’s carbon pollution cuts and called the Paris deal an “unfair economic burden” to the U.S. economy.

The Trump administration will not be able to finalize its exit until a day after the presidential election in November 2020.
