West Nile Virus Expands Footprint in Greece and Italy

Three new cases of West Nile virus were reported in Greece over the past week, raising this summer’s total to seven and pointing to a gradual increase in infections. The Health Ministry had confirmed the first four cases earlier this month, prompting stepped-up mosquito control in affected areas. Five of the seven cases were linked to West Attica, one was imported from Serbia, and the latest involves a patient in Ilia, in northwestern Peloponnese—suggesting a possible spread beyond the initial clusters.

Meanwhile, Italy has confirmed at least 32 cases and two deaths from West Nile virus so far in 2025, amid rising concern across southern Europe. Most Italian cases were recorded in the province of Latina in the Lazio region, around 100km south of Rome. Italy’s national health institute noted that while case numbers are typical, the virus is appearing in different regions this year.
