449 new deaths in UK as authorities plan 30,000 extra mortuary spaces

The UK Department of Health announced 449 new deaths around the country’s hospitals, after having contracted coronavirus. The latest increase brings the death count to 16,509.

124,743 persons have now tested positive after 4,676 were identified in the past 24 hours.

The Prime Minister’s Office continued to refute suggestions that the lockdown could be eased immediately. A spokesperson of PM Boris Johnson insisted that “if you move too quickly then the virus could begin to spread exponentially again. The public will expect us to do everything we can to stop the spread of the virus and protect lives.”

UK media reported today that  plans have been set in motion for creating another 30,000 extra mortuary spaces to store the bodies of people who die with coronavirus. While officials have expressed hopes in recent days that the death rate was flattening, these new details relating to contingency planning have been described as a reflection of a more pessimistic scenario.
