Trump can’t imagine why people are asking about disinfectant to cure coronavirus

US President Donald Trump said he was being sarcastic when suggesting injecting disinfectant to treat the novel coronavirus. Quizzed about the exponential rise of calls on American hotlines asking for further information on the alleged use of such products to treat the virus, Trump retorted: “I can’t imagine why”.

A number of Governors, particularly in Maryland and Michigan pointed their finger at Trump for the spike in such calls. Disinfectants are very hazardous substances and can be lethal. Top doctors and specialists around the country have taken a strong position against Trump’s recommendations.

During yesterday’s daily Covid-19 news briefing, a journalist informed Trump that Maryland’s emergency hotline was inundated with calls seeking guidance about the possible use of disinfectant, making particular reference to Trump’s comments. “I can’t imagine that”, quipped Trump before moving on quickly to next questions. Asked whether he assumed responsibility for this, he insisted:”No, I don’t.”

Mr Trump had made the remarks last Thursday: “I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute”. But he retracted, and by the weekend he suggested that his comment was made sarcastically to reporters like you just to see what would happen.”

During yesterday’s briefing, Trump was also questioned about possible delays to the presidential election due in November after the most likely Democratic nominee, former US Vice-President Joe Biden, suggested that Trump would “try to kick back the election somehow”. The President dismissed this remark as “made-up propaganda”, insisting that he had no reason to do that. “I look forward to that election,” Trump added.

When asked if he thought he deserved to be re-elected after losing more Americans in six weeks than the two decades of the Vietnam war, he re-iterated his believe that his administration is doing “unbelievable job”.

So far, almost one million cases have been registered around the 50 stares, with over 55,000 deaths.
