At least 79 injured in blast at explosives plant in central Russia (Updated)

At least 79 people were injured and 15 people hospitalised after a blast at a Russian explosives manufacturing plant, according to a statement from the Russian health ministry.

The blast took place at the “Kristall” factory in Dzerzhinsk about 400 kilometres east of Moscow, in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

According to a source quoted by Interfax news agency, the factory was used to produce and store high-explosive bombs. They add that the facility at the JSC Kristall Research Institute has now been completely destroyed.

A factory official says five people were inside at the time of the blast, and they had been safely evacuated. Firefighters say they do not know if anyone else is still inside the building, the BBC reports.
