Labour MEP Thomas Bajada votes for Metsola in Presidency vote
Labour MEP Thomas Bajada voted for Roberta Metsola during Wednesday’s vote for the EP Presidency. ‘‘I believe that it is important to have Maltese voices in high positions in the EU and internationally in the coming years,” Bajada told reporters in Strasbourg. “This does not mean that I agree with her or that we always agree on everything”, he added. His two colleagues, MEPs Alex Agius Saliba and Daniel Attard said they abstained from the vote. In a press briefing, Agius Saliba said that his abstention was linked to Metsola’s position on the Gaza ‘genocide’, what he described as a lack of effort to facilitate the use of the Maltese language and her unclear position on abortion. WSC denies Balluta contimination is linked to sewerage network
The green color in Balluta Bay is not due to contamination from the sewerage network, the Water Services Corporation (WSC) stated, without specifying the actual cause. The bay turned green over the weekend, prompting numerous complaints from local residents and visitors. Bathing in the bay has been prohibited for nearly two months, with the Environmental Health authorities first issuing a warning on May 24 after detecting microbiological contamination. The WSC reported that after receiving initial contamination reports, they launched an investigation which confirmed that the contamination was not linked to their network. It was discovered that a stormwater tunnel in the area was in severe disrepair, causing contaminants to flow directly into the bay. (Times of Malta)
Energy mismanagement leading to frequent powercuts, PN says
The Nationalist Party criticised the energy sector’s mismanagement, stating that Enemalta workers and the people of Malta and Gozo are suffering due to incompetence, poor planning, and corruption. During a press conference with PN MPs Ryan Callus and Joe Giglio, the party claimed the government is exhausted and that the lack of investment is causing significant hardship. The MPs highlighted that, similar to last summer, Malta and Gozo are facing widespread blackouts because of insufficient investment over the past decade. They noted that it has become common for many areas to endure prolonged periods without power. They assured that a Nationalist government would prioritize the necessary investments to permanently resolve these issues.
