At least nine people have been killed in Florida as a result of Hurricane Milton.
On Wednesday, authorities in St. Lucie County reported four deaths at the Spanish Lakes Country Club, a senior living community in Fort Pierce.
Additionally, two deaths were confirmed in St. Petersburg. According to Police Chief Anthony Holloway, one death was due to a medical condition, while the other involved an individual found in a park.
In Volusia County, Sheriff Michael J. Chitwood confirmed that three people died, including one victim who was killed by a fallen tree, as reported by NBC.
During a virtual White House briefing, Mayorkas emphasized that no resources would be diverted from recovery efforts related to Hurricane Helene to assist those affected by Hurricane Milton, assuring that there are sufficient resources for both. However, he urged Congress to allocate additional funding to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as needed. “We will need additional funds, and we implore Congress to ensure FEMA receives the necessary funding,” Mayorkas stated.
Milton’s wind speeds have dropped to 80 mph (129 km/h), but is still a category one hurricane, and it was expected to downgrade to a post-tropical storm overnight. A storm surge warning remains for the state’s east coast – from Sebastian Inlet to Altamaha Sound, which is further north in Georgia.
