Severe Weather Forces School Closures in Sicily

A powerful Mediterranean cyclone, named Storm Gabri, has prompted a red weather alert in Eastern Sicily and other southern regions of Italy. Today, Friday, January 17, heavy rains, thunderstorms, and winds exceeding 100 km/h are expected to batter the area, causing widespread disruptions and safety concerns.

The red alert issued by the regional civil protection agency has led to the closure of schools in several cities, including Ragusa, Siracusa, Agrigento, and Catania. Train services have also been suspended on some lines. Similar precautionary measures are in place for universities, public parks, cemeteries, and outdoor sports facilities.

The provinces most at risk—Messina, Catania, Siracusa, Ragusa, Caltanissetta, and Enna—are bracing for torrential rains and potential flash floods. The storm is expected to intensify throughout the day, creating hazardous conditions across the region.

Storm Gabri’s Path

Storm Gabri marks the arrival of a new wave of extreme weather in Southern Italy. Following a brief period of calm, the cyclone is expected to bring severe weather conditions to Sardinia, Sicily, and Calabria today. By tomorrow, Saturday, January 18, the storm will move eastward, impacting Puglia, Molise, and Abruzzo. Northern Italy, in contrast, will remain largely unaffected, with cloudy skies, fog, and occasional snow.

In response to the deteriorating weather, Regional Infrastructure Minister Aricò has urged residents to limit travel to essential journeys only. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with emergency services on high alert to respond to potential flooding and storm damage.

As the storm progresses, residents in affected areas are advised to stay indoors and follow updates from local authorities to ensure their safety.
