Cambodia and Thailand agree to ‘immediate and unconditional ceasefire’

Cambodia and Thailand have reached an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire” following high-level peace talks aimed at halting escalating border violence that has killed at least 33 people and displaced thousands since 24 July.

The agreement was announced by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who played a mediating role in the negotiations. “This is a vital first step to a de-escalation and a restoration of peace and security,” he said, confirming the ceasefire will take effect from midnight local time.

Tensions between the two Southeast Asian neighbours have simmered for years, rooted in a long-standing border dispute dating back to colonial-era demarcations following France’s occupation of Cambodia.

The ceasefire comes after U.S. President Donald Trump called on both nations to end hostilities as a pre-condition to ongoing trade discussions with Washington.
