At Least 370 Dead, 300 Missing on Central Mediterranean Migrant Route in 2025

At least 370 people have died and 300 remain missing on the Central Mediterranean migrant route between January 1 and August 9, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Libya.

The figures were released in the UN agency’s latest update, published on X. The IOM noted that during the same period, 14,063 migrants were intercepted at sea and returned to Libya. Among them were 12,170 men, 1,295 women, 453 minors, and 145 individuals whose gender was not recorded.

The Central Mediterranean route, stretching between North Africa and southern Europe, remains one of the world’s deadliest migration corridors. Human rights groups have long raised concerns about the return of migrants to Libya, where many face detention in dire conditions.
