3.9 billion tonnes of seaborne goods handled by EU

In 2017, the total gross weight of goods handled in European Union ports (inward and outward) was estimated to be almost 4.0 billion tonnes. Compared to 2016, this represents an increase of 2.6% from 3.9 million tonnes.

Among the EU Member States, the Netherlands reported the largest volumes of seaborne freight handling (596 million tonnes, 15% of the EU total), followed by Spain (486 million tonnes, 12%), the United Kingdom (482 million tonnes, 12%) and Italy (475 million tonnes, 12%).

These four countries accounted for more than half (51%) of the total gross weight of seaborne goods handled in EU ports.
