These are the main news from Malta’s news portals.

More than 1,800 British nationals have applied for Maltese citizenship since the Brexit vote in 2016. The Shift News says this represents a 200 percent increase over three years, but applicants said that the process is somewhat stringent.

Meanwhile, One News says that the government is implementing a plan to mitigate the effects of Brexit on tourism. Addressing an industry forum, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said that the country needs to attract higher-quality tourism.

The theme of tourism was also discussed by President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca on Friday. The Times quotes the President who said that environmental degradation is having an adverse effect on the touristic product.

A secondary-school student was found in possession of drugs and carrying some €200. Newsbooksays that the anti-drug squad moved in after suspicions arose among teachers and students. The 15-year-old boy will face charges in court.

Alternattiva Demokratika MEP candidate Mina Tolu criticised politicians for refusing to openly discuss abortion in Malta. MaltaToday publishes a video posted by Tolu who said that ignoring the subject only reinforces taboos.

The Nationalist Party launched a set of proposals on the fight against cancer. Net News says that the recommendations address the needs of patients, professionals, and NGOs active in this sector. Among the proposals, the party is calling for the establishment of a research fund, national screening for prostate cancer, and specialised psychological assistance for children
