Italy has seen a return to a descending curve on Easter Sunday, with 4,092 new cases registered in the last 24 hours. On Saturday this count had reached 4,694, thereby indicating a positive development in the circumstances.
The number of deaths has also slowed down, with 431 people perishing on the day dedicated to the Risen Christ, an improvement on the 619 who failed to make it through Saturday. Just under 19,900 people have now died.
Bergamo, one of the worst hit cities in the Lombardy region has also registered a significant drop in new cases, 51 today as opposed to 107 yesterday. This city has seen 10,309 people becoming infected since the start of the crisis. Up to just 10 days ago, the city was adding ore than 300 new cases every day.
Quizzed on whether positive indications can be taken from the current data, Luca Richeldi, member of Government’s scientific team explained that “the trend is by now a credible one, and considering the numbers at hand we can safely say that the measures adopted by the health authorities are bearing fruit”. Richeldi explained that the most important and credible data remains that related to deaths and people in intensive care, since statistics relating to new cases are dependent on the number of tests taken.
