EU Member States governments agree that new Brexit proposals ‘do not provide basis’ for agreement

European Union member states have agreed that the government’s new Brexit proposals “do not provide a basis for concluding an agreement”, the Independent quoted a European Commission spokesman saying.

A representative for the body said that the UK would be given another chance to present its proposals – however the EU27 were in agreement that the plans laid out by Boris Johnson were not enough to secure the makings of an initial deal.

In a statement a spokesman for the body said: “We have completed discussions with the UK for today.

“We gave our initial reaction to the UK’s proposals and asked many questions on the legal text. We will meet again on Monday to give the UK another opportunity to present its proposals in detail.

“We will continue to debrief the European Parliament and the Council, in line with our transparency policy.
