EU votes to pass new copyright law

The European Union on Tuesday voted to pass a controversial new copyright law to replace the existing copyright law that dates back to 2001.

The reform means platforms such as YouTube and Facebook will be liable for copyrighted material on their sites.

• Social media platforms like Twitter, YouTube and Facebook would be responsible for monitoring all content that is uploaded.

• The reform includes a provision forcing the likes of Google News to pay publishers for press snippets shown in search results.

• The text before parliament was agreed in negotiations between the EU legislature and member states last month.
