Express Trailers is proudly celebrating a decade of sustainable growth, marking ten years since launching its green journey with a firm commitment to environmental responsibility and investment in cleaner, more efficient technologies.
This journey began in 2015 when the company strategically upgraded its fleet to EURO VI standards, significantly reducing emissions and enhancing fuel efficiency. This early decision laid the groundwork for a broader shift toward sustainability.
Between 2022 and the end of 2024, these efforts resulted in a CO₂ emissions reduction of more than 63 tons, highlighting the tangible impact of Express Trailers’ investments in greener operations.
In 2025, the company reaffirmed its commitment with several high-impact initiatives. Most notably, it installed what is believed to be the island’s largest industrial spray booth—a project led by the Property & Projects Department under Franco Vella.
Equipped with advanced air filtration systems, the booth captures volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter, reducing airborne pollutants while optimising paint usage and minimising waste.
“Sustainability is more than just equipment—it’s about embedding values across every part of our business,” said CEO Etienne Attard. “This spray booth is another step forward in reducing our environmental impact while improving operational efficiency.”
A major milestone this year was the expansion of the company’s eco-friendly fleet, which now includes ten new refrigerated trailers and ten standard trailers, all built to the latest low-emission standards. The refrigerated units feature Carrier Transicold’s advanced Vector™ technology with all-electric E-Drive™ architecture and Stage V-compliant diesel engines.
“These units offer up to 30% fuel savings and drastically lower emissions,” said Antoine Vella, Director and Head of International Operations. “With fewer moving parts and reduced risk of refrigerant leakage, we’re achieving greater energy efficiency and consistent cooling, especially when connected to our depot’s electric infrastructure.”
Complementing this, Express Trailers also introduced electric courier vehicles into its operations, reinforcing its commitment to decarbonising last-mile logistics and supporting Malta’s broader climate goals.
Digitalisation plays a key role in the company’s green evolution. Ongoing tech investments have streamlined operations, reduced paper usage, and improved interdepartmental communication—enhancing efficiency while benefiting the customer experience.
Express Trailers is also aligning with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which prompted a comprehensive review of its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices. “CSRD helped us embed sustainability into every aspect of our organisation—from strategy and infrastructure to training and culture,” added Mr. Attard.
Internal initiatives are strengthening this cultural shift. Training programs and workshops aim to build environmental awareness across all departments, making sustainability a shared responsibility. Another upcoming initiative is the Drivers’ Academy, which will promote safer, more efficient driving to reduce environmental impact without compromising service standards.
