France will host European leaders’ summit on Ukraine as US and Russia prepare for peace talks

Europe’s leaders are scrambling to respond to America’s plans to end the war in Ukraine, regardless of their stance on the matter.

Today, a hastily arranged summit is taking place in Paris to discuss President Trump’s apparent intention to strike a deal with his Russian counterpart, despite opposition from Ukraine and its European allies.

For the first time in three years, US and Russian negotiators are set to meet in Saudi Arabia next week, with Ukraine excluded from the talks.

This year’s Munich Security Conference has served as a stark wake-up call for Europe. After decades of relying on the US for defence, the White House’s message is clear: Europe can no longer take American support for granted and must now take greater responsibility for its own security.
